Course Objectives This course will introduce the students with plant taxonomy and plant diversity. The specific objectives include: naming of plants and their classification based on evolutionary relationships, characteristics of plant groups and plant diversity.

  • Introductory molecular systematics
    • Methods and principles of plant systematics,
    • Nomenclature, specimen preparation, and identification,
  • Classification systems of flowering plants,
  • Evolution of plant diversity, biodiversity & biogeography,
  • Origins of Angiosperms, and phylogenetic relationships of Angiosperms,
  • Molecular phylogeny of Plants,
  • Role of Chloroplast and nrDNA genes in phylogeny of Plants,
  • Molecular identification of plants,
  • Bar Code of Plants, Identification of local flora, and Flora of Pakistan.
