To provide an appreciation of the broad range of sensing techniques available for the Guidance and Fuzing of missiles, with special emphasis on Fuzing and the relative merits of “radio”, “optical” and “acoustical” methods.
Course Objectives
Principles of Guidance; Active, semi-active, passive, proportional navigation. Principles of Fuzing; Safety & Reliability, Arming; In-Line & Out-of-Line Systems. Event sensors, environmental sensors, influence sensors; Signal analysis and decision making. Radio; Superheat & Homodyne Receivers; Baseband; Phase-sensitive detection & Doppler detection, Phase coding & Correlation detection. Electrical Power; Batteries & Fuel cells, relative merits & typical applications, effects of temperature, rapid discharge, shelf life; Batteries vs generators; typical EED firing-circuit. Radio/Radar/Below-water Fuzes; Relative merits of narrowband and wideband wave-forms: Doppler fuzes; Ranging with pulsed and wideband DCW. Waveforms; Range sensitivity & ambiguity considerations; Magnetic, Pressure and Sonar sensing; Arming and False-alarm control.
