ME-874 Reliability Based Design
Campus College of E&ME
Programs PG
Session Fall Semester 2016
Course Title Reliability Based Design
Course Code ME-874
Credit Hours 3
Pre-Requisutes Nil
Course Objectives The new course aims to cover basic principles as well as practical aspects of Reliability Based Design applied to the Mechanical/Structural domain. The course will cover both the analytical techniques as well as the numerical methods used in Reliability Based Design. By the end of the course, they should be able to apply the RBD fundamentals to problems with explicit as well as implicit performance functions.
Detail Content
  • Basic concept of reliability
  • Reliability based design vs. the traditional design approach
  • Commonly used probability distributions
  • Fundamentals of reliability analysis
  • Monte Carlo simulation
  • Techniques applicable to implicit performance functions
  • Stochastic Finite Element Method
Course Outcome
  • To understand the concepts of reliability, risk, and quality as applied to engineering
  • To understand the importance of reliability and quality in the design and manufacture of engineered products, components and systems
  • To be able to use methods of reliability analysis and reliability-based design to mechanical and structural components and systems
  • To understand analytical and Monte-Carlo based methodologies for reliability evaluation
  • To be able to use iterative techniques for solution to non-linear problems
